The darkest of Tom Ford’s Jardin Noir series, Café Noir uses its coffee note subtly, providing depth and even an animalic warmth to the usually ladylike rose. The luscious, indolic, civet-like richness of coffee accompanies the elegant rose note like a devil on an angel’s shoulder, adding darkness and danger, amplified by notes of woods and patchouli. Saffron — a classic, comforting, Middle Eastern pairing with rose — makes Café Noir even more velvety and sumptuous. Although a glimmer of proper rose’s facets peek through in the dry down — a little soap here, a little lipstick there — mostly, this disheveled flower is fixing her (or his) mussed up hair after a little romp.
