From their advent till today, the Chypre family has been introduced as the pinnacle of the perfumery because of their complexity and exquisite harmony. One significant perfume to propose their opulence is Chypre Palatin by MDCI. This fragrance is a harmonious convergence of classic and modern elements, crafted with precision by Bertrand Duchaufour, one of the most respected noses in the fragrance world.
Parfums MDCI was founded by Claude Marchal with the vision of returning to the artistic roots of perfumery. The mid-90s saw a market saturated with mass-produced fragrances that lacked individuality. Marchal sought to change this landscape, focusing on quality compositions presented in hand-crafted bottles.
The fragrance opens with a fruity and woodsy blend, where bold hints of classic chypre elements are immediately recognizable. The top notes feature an interplay of hyacinth, tangerine, bergamot, galbanum, and thyme, which gives the scent an initial burst of power.
The heart of the fragrance is a floral bouquet, highlighted by rose, jasmine, iris, and a touch of prune. It conjures visions of lavish, baroque interiors mixed with the opulence of Middle Eastern textiles.
As the fragrance dries down, deeper and more mysterious notes emerge. Leather, tolu balsam, vanilla absolute, and oakmoss provide a resinous, smoky base that adds complexity to the perfume. This is not a typical oriental base to be fit in words. Castoreum, a potent animalic note, adds depth but is tempered by hyacinth and vanilla, creating a softness that lingers on the skin.
Chypre Palatin is a fragrance designed for both men and women. However, more than gender, it requires taste and style. In terms of longevity and sillage, it’s a marvelous fragrance that makes one wonder. Does anybody still create perfumes with this precision and power?! It’s been ages.
