Put aside the marketing for a minute - no, I Am Trash (or Les Fleurs du Déchet) does not smell like trash! Etat Libre d’Orange is a brand known for making high concept art, and this is no exception. In I Am Trash, the idea is to raise awareness about the continued usefulness of the things that normally get thrown away, and find a way to upcycle these items to create something beautiful in its own right.
I Am Trash is a perfume made entirely from ‘found objects’ like the fruit peels and wood chips leftover from extraction by the perfume or food industry. This makes perfect sense. After all, some of the most exquisite materials in perfumery derive from waste. Ambergris, for example, is effluvia from a whale washed up on a beach. Oud is a tree’s white cell response to a fungal infection. And so on and so forth.
But fear not, for I Am Trash is as far from the ruder, dirtier aspects of nature’s waste as you can imagine. It is a gentle fruity-floral that wraps a woodland bouquet of wild strawberries, apple, rose, and citrus rind up in a frothy musk and asks you to forgive it its dramatic back story. Nothing dark or rotting lurks in the corners. This is a purely bright, sunny concoction of fruits and flowers, with clean musks, radiant Iso E Super, and a dab of creamy sandalwood in the base pinning it all together. Etat Libre d’Orange could have named this I Am Joy and nobody would blink. But we love the name I Am Trash because it’s a reminder to be more thoughtful about what we throw away, and testament to the fact that, sometimes, out of trash comes true beauty.
bitter orange, apple, lemongrass, tangerine, rose, Iso E Super, wild strawberry, Atlas cedar, Sandalore, Akigalawood

I received a sample of this with the Etat Libre D’orange discovery set and it was the only one I wanted to wear consistently. Ordered the 9oz along with Byredo’s rose of no man lands to be a rose comparison before going full bottle.
I am trash has this amazing apple note that I just can’t get over, and then dries into a beautiful rose. I truly love this scent. The rose is neither too vintage or sweet. Comes across clean and fresh. I do go “nose blind” to it faster than I’d like while wearing which drops it’s down a star for me. But it’s lovely.
I smelled this perfume years ago and fell in love. It’s fruity and fresh but a little tangy and musky. It settles into a sweeter with the tanginess still coming through. It’s really well done and longevity is good. Good for spring, leans feminine but can be unisex
My first clear scent impression was of the bitter orange top note. But I also got a fruity freshness I couldn’t precisely untangle the notes from. I had a 1 ml dabber and the projection was medium. Wear got me to not quite midday before I’d have to reapply. It wore down almost immediately on me to the Iso E Super and other warm wood notes. It felt like a top and a base without much middle on me. I’m a woman, and to me it’s a true unisex scent. I will use up my sample, but I wouldn’t order it again. I’m super glad I tried it through Scent Split because of the eco-conscious message. But it’s not going to become one of my staples.
I was gifted a Discovery Set of this brand for Christmas and this scent was my favorite overall so I bought a larger ScentSplit sample. So unique and fresh, and I love the backstory for how it’s made from recycled ingredients!
However, as I’ve been wearing it out more, coworkers have commented on smelling something “wet” in our office and now my partner has stated that whatever I’ve been wearing is too musky. I could just be putting too much on (a little does go a super long way with this brand’s scents overall), but it is a bummer to hear that it’s not appealing for those encounter daily. Oh well, such is perfume life!
Really nice scent for summer. Might be full bottle worthy.
Don’t like the smell is like rotten fruits!
This is so fruity and fresh it makes my mouth water! There’s still a musky ness to it that makes it feel mature
Very nice, fresh, kind of fruity scent. It's floral but not overly so. While it's not the type of scent I usually go for, I actually quite liked this.
Funny enough, i am trash kinda smells like a fancier version of fructis garnier shampoo. Lasting power is decent.
It was nice
