There are two types of fragrances. One aims to grab the attention of the majority by smelling nice without pushing boundaries, while the other steps beyond functionality, challenging the senses with scents that are uncommon by the general definition of perfume. The latter group acts like a slap out of nowhere. Guns of Sakura was created by the legendary Antoine Lie for Maison de l’Asie in the latter division. This perfume has a simple yet captivating composition that leaves a great impact, just like a painting on a museum wall that transfixes everyone glued to it. This is for sure the art and mastery of the perfumer Antoine Lie, who makes marvels with a brevity of scents.
This fragrance initiates with a fresh, delightful, black currant, paired with a strong, otherworldly metallic accord and a breeze of frankincense. The perfume has a different accent of fruity notes in the very beginning, but it quickly submerges into a peculiar, mineral, gunpowder-like, and blood-like metallic ambiance that dominates the entire perfume. For this intriguing scent, Guns of Sakura is a sibling of Secretions Magnifiques by Antoine Lie for Etat Libre d’Orange and also a sibling of Red +MA (discontinued ages ago) by the same nose for Blood Concept.
Once settled on the skin, the sharpness of the iron-like smell subsides, and comforting notes of sandalwood, musk, and guaiac wood emerge.
The tenacity and sillage of the perfume are masterfully measured. Not too potent and too steady to annoy, not too weak and ephemeral to fly away before it leaves an impact.
