This approach is presented in all the creations of the house, but Poudrextase, with a great difference, stands as a manifestation of their core concept. The perfume leans into what is often described as animalic territory – notes that feel bodily and intimate. Such accords, which are mainly used in the base of many perfumes to give the other elements a 3D dimension, are designed in Marlou’s creation solidly as the main actors to mirror aspects of human scent itself.
While a fragrance might open with something almost familiar and nice smelling, Poudrextase uncorks with an edgy animality that challenges the definitions of beauty and prettiness. It reminds us of the famous quote by Rei Kawakubo: "For something to be beautiful it doesn’t have to be pretty." Poudrextase insists on the beauty of being animal/human without being ashamed, trusting in the beauty of being raw and realistic.
The perfume unfurls not with a soft, prudent type of musk, but with an intense animalic note, civet, which pushes our olfactory tolerance. This acts like a slap in the face, but at the same time, thanks to its calculated power, it inevitably raises curiosity and confers the ecstasy of smelling something forbidden.
Texture plays a central role. Poudrextase feels tactile, almost as if it could be touched. Besides the coarseness of civet, there are tender facets of rice powder which resemble skin warmed under a loose fabric. Together with the warmth of tonka beans, they create a sense of intimacy at its highest point. There is a murmuring shade of conifers in the background that provides a gentle bitterness, enveloping the animality with its semi-smoky, incense-leaning woodiness.
The result is perfumery that does not aim for universal appeal. Instead, it invites a more personal interaction, one that depends on proximity and absolute intimacy.
